For the study, published in the journal BMJ Open Diabetes Research and Care, the researchers tracked the health data of 7,065 workers aged between 35 and 74 years for a period of 12 years. During the study, about one out of ten people developed diabetes, mainly men, older and obese. The results showed that those who worked 45 or more hours a week had a 63 per cent higher risk than women who worked between 35 and 40 hours.

According to the findings, an increased risk was not found among those working between 30 and 40 hours per week. The study suggests that people should balance their work and life to avoid such risks.

The same can not be said for men, Canadian researchers found in a study published Tuesday in the journal BMJ Open Diabetes Research & Care. "The difference in paid and unpaid hours for men and women are probably why", Dr Mahée Gilbert-Ouimet, the lead researcher on the study, was quoted as having said by ABC News. The men's higher level of physical activity may help to explain, in part, their lower risk of developing diabetes. Long working hours might also prompt a chronic stress response in the body, thus, increasing the risk of hormonal abnormalities and insulin resistance.

The study authors aren't sure why extra work may boost diabetes risk, or why this link was only found in women. Moreover, the gender pay gap between men and women also plays an important role. Subjects were grouped into 4 time bands: 45+ hours, 41-44 hours, 35-40 hours, and 15-34 hours, with a range of factors considered including ethnicity, sex, age, place of birth, place of residence, health conditions, BMI, parenthood, and lifestyle.

It should be noted, though, that the study could only show an association between long work hours and diabetes; it wasn't created to prove a cause and effect.

"Weight loss was the dominant predictor of reduced diabetes incidence", study researcher Richard Hamman, from the University of Colorado at Denver and Health Sciences Center, and colleagues wrote in the study. What's more, working hours were measured at one time point only, and it wasn't possible to deduce from the medical records which type of diabetes participants had, although type I diabetes accounts for only around one in 20 adult cases.
