Comcast Xfinity Mobile will throttle your data usage to "save you money"

Comcast Xfinity Mobile Comcast launched its Xfinity Mobile MVNO last year

Comcast's move to reduce all Xfinity Mobile hotspot connections to 3G is more unusual.

Xfinity Mobile users will soon lose the ability to stream video in 720p.

To help you conserve data, we've established 480p as the standard resolution for streaming video through cellular data.

There is a way to work around this for now, though. That doesn't mean you'll never have the option of 720p mobile video streaming...you'll just have to pay more to access it. Later this year, however, it will charge for 720p streaming, and it reportedly does not have plans to allow 1080p streaming or higher over cellular.

In addition to the resolution cap, Comcast is also throttling speeds for those who create personal hotspots on the Xfinity Mobile unlimited plan, maxing out at just 600kbps, regardless of whether users have reached the 20GB threshold.

If you're an Xfinity Mobile customer, what do you think about these changes? All Xfinity Mobile customers are receiving this email, Comcast confirmed to Ars.

Comcast has been telling Xfinity Mobile customers about the changes in an email titled, "Update on cellular video resolution and personal hotspots". "By the Gig" subscribers will still get 4G speeds with their hotspot. Second, we're setting personal hotspotting at 3G speeds for all Unlimited customers, which will allow customers to continue to do numerous things they enjoy doing online. It's all the Verizon speed and coverage you could want but through Comcast!

The Wireless industry is an ever-changing world where big ideas come along daily. The unlimited plan costs $45 a line each month, and it's unlimited in the sense that there are no overage fees for using too much data. But with these changes, it's looking less like a steal, and more like the rest of the unlimited data plans on the market - not really unlimited.

Xfinity Mobile, Comcast's MVNO that's powered by Verizon's network, is about to get some new restrictions.

So, the telco has chose to implement throttling on all of its customers when they are on an LTE or CDMA network. The major wireless carriers have imposed various video and hotspot limits on their mobile networks without being punished by the Federal Communications Commission. Customers will only be able to do that if they opt for the By the Gig data option which charges $12 per GB of data.
