'Fish pedicure' caused one woman's toenails to stop growing

Indeed, one woman in NY developed an odd toenail problem after having a "fish pedicure", according to a new report of the case. According to an American Medical Association report, a woman had this done, then shed her toenails.

"I wouldn't say it necessarily poses a significant risk to humans, but it did illustrate that they may be carrying things which are nasty both to fish and humans".

In the JAMA case, Lipner says with no other explanation for what could have caused the problems with the young woman's toenails, the pedicure seems the most likely culprit. The woman said she had no history of any pain or trauma to her toes, no nail disorders or recent illnesses, and hadn't started any new medications.

Fish pedicures involve having small fish nibble on a person's feet while they soak in a tub of warm or room temperature water.

This phenomenon, known to doctors as onychomadesis, usually results in the nail falling off long after an initial event (such as an injury) arrests nail growth.

Writing in the journal JAMA Dermatology, she explained that the freaky beauty ritual first gained traction after people noticed that wild populations of the toothless fish - a member of the carp family native to Turkey - liked to nibble on human skin, and for whatever reason, preferred munching on unsightly psoriasis plaques more than normal tissue.

Here's hoping she doesn't resort to another fish pedicure to get her feet summer-ready.

"While the mechanism of action is not entirely clear, it is likely due to the fish traumatizing the nail matrix", the woman's treating doctor, Dr. Sheri Lipner, told Gizmodo.

"This is not uncommon in women with a Greek foot ... who wear high heels and pinpointed shoes", Tosti said, referring to feet whose second toes are longer than the first, like Greek statues.

What she had done, though, was have a fish pedicure six months before.

"Unfortunately the water is sometimes contaminated with bacteria and other pathogens and the fish themselves can do more damage than good", Day said.

One skin expert not involved with the case said the report raises cause for concern. "In addition to onychomadesis, there are also serious infections associated with fish pedicures".

As for Lipner's patient, her nails will grow back, though it'll take time.

Several spas in the USA and Canada offer fish pedicures but they are controversial.

Here in Canada, the Vancouver Island Health Authority shut down a fish pedicure spa in Duncan, B.C.in 2011, citing concerns the pedicures could lead to the transmission of skin diseases.

Their use has been banned in some states in the USA - at least 10, by Lipner's count.

"We will have to wait quite a while to see the outcome", she said.
