North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has visited island areas near China, the country's state media said on Saturday (June 30), marking his first inspection following his historic summit with US President Donald Trump earlier this month, Yonhap news agency reported.

Bruce Klingner, a former CIA Korea expert now at the conservative Heritage Foundation think tank, said the NBC report showed Mr Trump's statement that North Korea was no longer a nuclear threat was "absurd".

On Sunday, Pompeo told CNN he would not put a timeline on negotiations for North Korea's denuclearization, contradicting a senior defense official who said Washington would soon present a timeline to North Korea with "specific asks".

"Work is ongoing to deceive us on the number of facilities, the number of weapons, the number of missiles", he said.

A Japan-based newspaper slammed calls for the complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization of North Korea, and said the United States is responsible for making progress in building trust with the Kim Jong Un regime.

Harris was a hawkish commander, once earmarked for the post of ambassador to Australia, and a strong supporter of joint military exercises between US and South Korean forces.

"There's no evidence that they are decreasing stockpiles, or that they have stopped their production", an official told NBC.

Mr Lewis said the report also implied that USA intelligence had evidence to suggest North Korea did not intend to disclose one or more of the enrichment sites.

Trump's previous choice for the post, Victor Cha, was dropped in January following a disagreement over the White House's consideration of a pre-emptive strike against North Korea. A second official said an official announcement was expected in the coming days.

The General Association of Korean Residents, a pro-North Korea representative body that also serves as North Korea's de facto embassy in Tokyo, publishes Choson Sinbo.

USA officials have expressed concern that recent global engagement with Pyongyang could lead countries to relax sanctions pressure.

Officials said that the "assessment concludes that there is more than one secret site" but would Kim admit it?

The NBC report corroborates recent findings by a watchdog group that published satellite images this week showing work being done on the Yongbyon nuclear research facility. NBC News quoted an unnamed U.S. official said to have been briefed on the intelligence.

Ahead of the summit, North Korea rejected unilaterally abandoning an arsenal it has called an essential deterrent against US aggression.

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee voted to approve Admiral Harry Harris, the outgoing head of US Pacific Command and a veteran Asia hand, to head the US mission in Seoul.

The American President, in response, pledged to give North Korea security assurances.
