Defending Wimbledon champ Federer coasts into 2nd round

Noah Ferguson | 03 July, 2018, 03:04

Roger Federer's career-long clothing association with Nike appeared to be over on Monday as the Wimbledon champion walked on to Centre Court to open the defence of his title wearing a Uniqlo branded outfit.

The 20-times grand-slam victor faces Serbian Dusan Lajovic in the first round and believes his big-match experience can guide him through a tricky opening encounter.

However, Uniqlo has confirmed the change with a tweet announcing Federer as its new global brand ambassador, though the tennis great is still wearing Nike trainers.

According to Forbes magazine's recent list of the world's highest-paid athletes, Federer now earns $77.2m (£57.63m) a year, with his Nike sponsorship one of the most lucrative deals in sport.

According to ESPN.com's Darren Rovell, the deal with the Tokyo-based Uniqlo will be for 10 years and could approach more than $300 million in compensation.

Federer begins his campaign to win a record-equalling ninth title with a first round match against Dušan Lajović. I mean, besides the history and the mythical place that it is, you can not also practise on it", Federer told reporters."When you come out, there's a bit of uncertainty for both players...

Uniqlo doesn't make tennis footwear, so Federer wore white Nike shoes with light blue swooshes on Monday.

This switch also means that Federer won't be able to sport the "RF" logo as it officially belongs to Nike. The deal also has a clause that says the Federer will continue to get the money even if he doesn't play. "In a short period of time, it will come to me". This new contract marks a 300 per cent improvement on his old deal show that despite Federer's increasing years he remains a marketable commodity. I have deep roots with Nike. "But like Uniqlo, I also have a great love for life, culture and humanity", Federer said.

Federer was pushed to a tie-break in the opening set when he met the same player in the second round past year - but he needed just 20 minutes to hit the front this time around. But the good news is that it will come with me at one point.

"I am deeply committed to tennis and to winning championships".

Lajovic shook off his early nerves to at least give Federer some practice in the second and third sets but the Serbian could do no better than past year when he also suffered a straight-sets defeat by the Swiss, that time in the second round.
