Astronomers Believe They Have First Image of Newborn Planet

Kristine Garrett | 03 July, 2018, 03:26

A stunning, first-of-its-kind photo shows a huge, newfound alien world taking shape in the disk of gas and dust surrounding a young star. Of course, the center isn't naturally this dark.

Once an object has cleared a path around itself in the disk, it is a planet. "It is thought that planet formation starts when material in the disk starts to stick together, forming small clumps which [finally grow] to larger bodies-so-called planetesimals", Miriam Keppler, an author on both studies, told Newsweek.

Astronomers known that planets form from solar clouds which stars leave behind when they come into a being, but until now, the details surrounding the phenomena have been mysterious.

Astronomers from the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy used a very large telescope in the Atacama Desert in Chile called the Very Large Telescope (honestly) provided by the European Southern Observatory - the European Space Agency's base in the Southern Hemisphere. The instrument is considered to be one of the most powerful planet hunters in existence. The results of the research will be shared in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics [PDF].

'The problem is that until now, most of these planet candidates could just have been features in the disc'.

"We needed to observe a planet in a young star's disc to really understand the processes behind planet formation".

This is incredibly challenging, because even though SPHERE used the coronagraph to block the star, it had to seek out the planet's signal in multiple ways.

The planet, "PDS 70b" is a gigantic body of gas, with several times more mass than Jupiter, in a lonely rotation 3 billion miles from the star it rotates.

They also deduced that it has a cloudy atmosphere. To that end, the SPHERE system incorporates a coronagraph, which obscures the blinding light of the central star and allows astronomers to detect the much fainter light bouncing off the planet and the spinning disk of coronal materials. That's the same distance as Uranus from our sun.

This image is a big step forward for the study of planetary evolution and how planets are formed.
