"When vitamin D deficiency the risk of colorectal cancer becomes a 31% increase over the next five years", the researchers reported.
There have only been a handful of randomized clinical trials on vitamin D supplements and colorectal cancer - none of which found a connection.
Sunlight is the easiest way for the body to absorb vitamin D but doctors warn against sunbathing, which increases the risk for skin cancer.
A large new review of research from the American Cancer Society and other groups finds people who have higher blood levels of vitamin D have a lower risk of developing colorectal cancer. "Our findings suggest what's optimal for bone health may not be optimal for colorectal risk reduction", McCollough says, which could mean higher doses are needed to prevent cancer.
In the study, experts analyzed more than 5 700 cases of colorectal cancer and found an interesting correlation between lack of vitamin D and increased risk of colorectal cancer.
Because of this, people shouldn't rely on supplements to get their vitamin D, McCullough said.
It also suggested the ideal amount of vitamin D we should be aiming for may be higher than current guidelines suggest.
Similarly, concentrations above bone health sufficiency were associated with a 22 % lower risk.
Authors of the new paper said one problem with past studies was substantial differences in the tests used to measure 25-hydroxyvitamin D, the most widely accepted measure of the vitamin's concentration in the blood.
They concluded that vitamin D does indeed appear to provide protection against colon cancer, particularly for women.
Sources of vitamin D include sun exposure, fatty fish like salmon and trout, and foods such as milk and orange juice that are fortified with the vitamin.
These links persisted even after adjusting for known colorectal cancer risk factors.
'Currently, health agencies do not recommend vitamin D for the prevention of colorectal cancer, ' said Marji L. McCullough, ScD, American Cancer Society epidemiologist and co-first author of the study. Overall, the rate of colorectal cancer is declining, but it is increasing among younger people, a trend that recently prompted the American Cancer Society to recommend that screening for the disease start at age 45, not 50. But official recommendations might change at some point, the researchers said, given the study's conclusion that the recommended levels may be too low to protect against colorectal cancer.
