The draft asks Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to make proposals within 60 days "on ways and means for ensuring the safety, protection and well-being of the Palestinian civilian population under Israeli occupation", including "recommendations regarding an global protection mechanism".

Israeli forces have killed more than 120 Palestinians since 30 March, according to a United Nations tally. No Israelis have died.

The vote at the General Assembly was 120 votes in favor, 8 votes against, and 45 abstentions, for the resolution entitled "Protection of the Palestinian civilian population".

The draft resolution being considered Wednesday was proposed by Arab and Islamic countries. "What makes Gaza different for some is that attacking Israel is their favorite sport". "That´s why we are here today", said Haley.

Standing with a half dozen Arab and Islamic supporters Friday, the Palestinian ambassador said Guterres "should utilize all the tools available to him in the (U.N.) Secretariat and on the ground, and with all of the collective mind of all of us who are ready and willing to help in any possible way".

Human Rights Watch said Wednesday that Israel's use of lethal force against Palestinian demonstrators in the Gaza Strip in recent weeks may constitute war crimes. Algeria, Turkey and the Palestinians put the resolution forward in the General Assembly after the United States vetoed a similar resolution in the 15-member UN Security Council earlier this month. Unlike the Security Council resolutions, those adopted in the General Assembly are non-binding.

The resolution asked Guterres to report back within 60 days on proposals "on ways and means for ensuring the safety, protection and well-being of the Palestinian civilian population under Israeli occupation, including. recommendations regarding an worldwide protection mechanism".

These could range from setting up an observer mission to a full-blown peacekeeping force, but action on any option would require backing from the Security Council, where the United States has veto power.

We need protection for our civilian population.

"We are asking for a simple thing", Mansour told the assembly.

The adopted resolution calls for "consideration of measures to guarantee the safety and protection" of Palestinian civilians.

For the Palestinians, the resolution's key provision is a request to U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to make proposals within 60 days "on ways and means for ensuring the safety, protection and well-being of the Palestinian civilian population under Israeli occupation", including on "an global protection mechanism".

Taking the podium, Israeli Ambassador Danny Danon assailed the measure as an "attempt to take away our basic right to self-defense".

US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley described the resolution as "grossly one-sided" as she pinned the blame on much of Palestinians' suffering on the Hamas movement, which runs the strip.

The U.S. amendment to condemn Hamas, which was voted on first, was approved by a vote of 62-58 with 42 abstentions. The United States sought to challenge the ruling requiring a two-thirds majority but that was defeated in a separate vote. Speaking from the floor, US Ambassador Nikki Haley countered that "denying a vote on the US amendment would be the height of this body's hypocrisy".

The General Assembly last held a similarly contentious vote on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in December, when it rejected President Donald Trump´s decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel´s capital and move the USA embassy there.
