Two Norwegian lawmakers on Wednesday nominated U.S. President Donald Trump nominated for the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize, citing Trump's historic summit on Tuesday with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore.

The nomination, reported by Norway's state broadcaster NRK, comes a little more than a month after a group of House Republicans sent a letter to the Norwegian Nobel Committee formally requesting that the president gets nominated for the highly coveted prize, the hill has reported. The deadline for this year's prize passed in January, so this nomination would make him eligible for next year.

Two Norwegian lawmakers - Christian Tybring-Gjedde and Per-Willy Amundsen - are behind the nomination.

While a Nobel award would cause consternation among Trump's critics, he also has some high-profile supporters.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in also said in April that Trump is worthy of the Nobel prize for jump-starting the peace talks with North Korea.

Politicians, academics, former peace laureates, directors of peace research institutes and current and former members of the Nobel Committee are among those who have the right to propose candidates.

Former recipients have included Martin Luther King Jr., Mother Teresa, Malala Yousafzai, Nelson Mandela, and Trump's predecessor, Barack Obama.

He declined to comment on Tuesday.

The committee's secretary, Olav Njoelstad, said "it is not impossible" for someone who has been criticised by committee members to be considered, and even win, the prize.

Nominations for this year's prize also formally closed on February 1, before the summit was agreed.

"Since taking office, President Trump has worked tirelessly to apply maximum pressure on North Korea to end its illicit weapons programs and bring peace to the region".
