Selection of North American bid could bring tournament to Edmonton

Kristine Garrett | 14 June, 2018, 08:50

Tory pointed to the city's recent experience hosting the Pan Am/Parapan Am Games in 2015 and the Invictus Games in 2017 as blueprints for making the proper arrangements for the World Cup, though he expects the 2026 tournament to be narrower in scope than the Pan Am Games, given the tournament will be confined to a single principle venue, BMO Field, and a few smaller sites for practices.

Mexico last held the event in 1986, while the US held the World Cup in 1994. Major League Soccer is already well established in the country's three biggest cities and will remain instrumental in developing players, with Canada's most promising rising star now featuring prominently on one of its teams.

Mayor Don Iveson is hopeful Edmonton will snag three or four games.

Earlier, US Soccer President Carlos Cordeiro has said his bid would generate $14bn in revenue and make an $11bn profit for Federation Internationale de Football Association.

Vancouver will watch from the sidelines after the B.C. government, citing concerns over the possible costs of being a host city, was unable to come to terms with the bid committee.

Peter Montopoli, the general secretary of the Canadian Soccer Association and Canada's bid director, said it will be 100 per cent natural grass, meaning temporary surfaces will have to be installed in stadiums with artificial turf. "To play a World Cup match in front of my friends and family, that'd be huge".

The World Cup remains the second-biggest global sporting event after the Olympic Games and offers a ratings bonanza for broadcasters around the world.

"We always had a very clear pathway to victory, we had that for some time and that basically triggered the strategy of trying to figure out how we get there", Cordeiro said. We are ready made. "The men's World Cup will take this country to a place it's never been before". Mexico and Canada will get 10 games each.

"The longer the province delays, the more challenging that is, the more risk is that we drop off as one of the seven cities that doesn't get to do it".

In a statement Wednesday, Alberta's minister responsible for sport, Ricardo Miranda, said the province has received a request for funding from the city.

Mexico has hosted the World Cup twice, in 1970 and 1986.

"It's a tremendous day", Shanks told Maria Bartiromo on "Mornings with Maria" on Wednesday. "Commonwealth is an unbelievable stadium, I love playing there". Atlanta, Baltimore, Boston, Cincinnati, Dallas, Denver, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Miami, Nashville, New York/New Jersey, Orlando, Philadelphia, the San Francisco Bay Area, Seattle, and Washington are all possible locations for USA games, with Canada's taking place in Edmonton, Montreal, and Toronto, and Mexico's potential host cities being Guadalajara, Mexico City, and Monterrey. "It's exciting times ahead". It hasn't been confirmed if that will be the case with the joint bid. "But I think it's also exciting to see the tournament over such a vast distance and see what that will bring".

There will also be significant costs associated with security for the event, but Tory said the city is counting on the partnerships with other governments to make that happen.

The lights and video screens need to be replaced.

British Columbia's government is standing by a decision that will leave the province on the sidelines when the World Cup comes to Canada in 2026.

Field dimensions smaller than FIFA's standard for World Cup matches, Catlett said, were the chief obstacles.

To do so would have invited ridicule when it needed to build or renovate the 14 stadiums it wants to use - a task FIFA's technical report said "cannot be overstated".

Meaning even if you know nothing at all about the game, the sport, the event, you can still sound like an absolute expert by confidently telling your friends that the victor will definitely be one of those who've either been there and done it or won it before.
