No, Netflix isn't going to stream a Minecraft video game

Telltale's interactive fare is well suited to Netflix's streaming service. The service merely requires players to use their remote as a game controller, leading to the initial speculation that additional hardware won't be necessary to play the select series coming to Netflix. According to the report, Netflix will kick off its video game pilot program with Telltale's popular game series Minecraft: Story Mode, as well as a project based on Stranger Things. "Games have become increasingly cinematic, but unlike gaming, there's no winners or losers in these types of stories, and we view it as interactive narrative storytelling on our service".

Telltale's Stranger Things, while developed in cooperation with Netflix, is not now planned to launch in the same manner. TechRadar reports that the streaming company has teamed up with Telltale Games (known for their point-and-click adaptations of The Walking Dead, Batman, and The Wolf Among Us) to distribute some of their games on Netflix this year.

The Minecraft project comes on the heels of Netflix's launch last summer of Puss in Book: Trapped in an Epic Tale, in which viewers chose the next chapter in their adventure. But it looks like we're waiting to see who'll make the first move in this bold new direction.

That said, it now sounds even simpler than that.

Sources say that playable demos of the experience have been in existence for at least the a year ago, and that an announcement of the partnership "could happen any day". When reached, Telltale told Engadget that they do not comment on rumors.

As for the yet-unannounced Telltale Stranger Things game, sources say the game should have been ready for launch in the autumn of 2017, but was pushed back to a later date. In addition, Netflix is working with the game company Telltale to create a game set in the world of "Stranger Things". The game was rendered in a retro-pixel style that emulated the gameplay of The Legend of Zelda, because, as BonusXP put it, "Both [Stranger Things and Zelda] are about exploration, and it's kind of a mysterious fit that fit the mood of the show". It will not be an interactive story appearing on Netflix. This role will likely be pivotal in bringing more interactive experiences to the platform in the future, and potentially lead to more Netflix-branded game crossovers.
