Irans Queiroz slams Nike over World Cup boots

Сборная Ирана за несколько дней до ЧМ-2018 осталась без… бутс Nike to Withhold Iranian Soccer Team's Shoes for World Cup Over US Sanctions

"The sanctions mean that, as a USA company, we can not provide shoes to players in the Iran national team at this time", Nike said in a statement Friday.

Nike will no longer supply the Iranian national soccer team with footwear for this month's World Cup, citing the Trump administration's decision to reimpose economic sanctions on the country.

Nike announced they have been forbidden from providing football boots to Iran's squad during the tournament, on account of sanctions imposed against the country by the United States. "This last comment of Nike was, in my personal view, an unnecessary statement.

Everybody is aware about the sanctions", Queiroz told Sky Sports.

Nike cited the global economic sanctions against Iran as the primary reason for the withdrawal, a outcome of the Trump administration's decision to withdraw from the 2015 worldwide nuclear deal and tighten restrictions against the Asian country.

"They should come out and apologize because this arrogant conduct against 23 boys is absolutely ridiculous and unnecessary", Queiroz said.

Iran's first match is on Saturday against Morocco.

With little time to react, Iran's players have taken varying steps to make sure they will be equipped to play: some have asked non-Iranian players on their club teams to loan them boots, according to one team official, while others have had friends acquire them or simply gone out and bought their own footwear at stores.

However, the company says it can not do so for the tournament in Russian Federation because of sanctions against Iran.

It remains to be seen whether Queiroz's defiant verdict bears fruit, given any loser of Friday's crunch fixture in Saint Petersburg would be left needing to beat either Spain or Portugal to reach the last 16.

"We are only managers and footballers, and should not get involved in such matters".
