A 42-39 defeat to South Africa, the disappointment of England's loss will be compounded by the fact that they had started the game in such a thrilling fashion; 24-3 ahead half-way through the opening half.

The Australian confirmed after the match that their had been an exchange of words with some local fans, who had watched their side come back from a 24-3 deficit early in the match.

England's Mike Brown scores a try during the first test against South Africa, at Ellis Park in Johannesburg.

A shaken South Africa did respond thanks to De Klerk from close range, and that helped spark an incredible fightback as they took the half-time lead.

When asked if he had said anything back, he added: "Of course I did, (but) it's not for me to share with you".

"I did not have to say much when we were in trouble because everybody was calm".

Jones made light of the incident later in his post-match media conference.

Later, Jones attempted to play down what had happened, by joking: "I was just asking them where I could get a good bottle of Pinotage and I'm still waiting for the answer!

After all three of these Tests - and hopefully we will win them all -then I will sit down and allow everything to sink in", said Kolisi in Joburg on Friday. "It was such a great game of rugby and you are anxious about one little conversation in the tunnel about a bottle of red wine".

"To see everybody here at Ellis Park, we really appreciate it. Thank you everybody for coming out this evening".

"Congratulations to South Africa for winning the game; for clawing back into the game".

Owen Farrell's touch down, and England's third, in the 18th minute silenced Ellis Park.

"The game was opening up and was slipping away from us and if we didn't do something to change the momentum of the game, it would get too far away from us", Jones said.

'The way we played in the first 20 minutes is the way we want to play all the time.

Erasmus' side showed that if every player reaches the required intensity, no team, not even England with their superior squad depth, will roll them over.

"I know the guys will be a little bit nervous in the beginning but they will go through it because we have worked very hard in the past two weeks", Kolisi added.

Saracens' Maro Itoje and Leicester Tigers' Jonny May both scored tries late on but South Africa managed to hold on and complete an fantastic turnaround.

However, South Africa kept the ball well at the end and lead the three-match series 1-0. Fullback Willie le Roux, another overseas-based player recalled by Erasmus, got the fourth for South Africa, which went to halftime 29-27 ahead.

The dream debut continued when he popped up on the opposite wing after a clever run from Le Roux created the space for fellow debutant Aphiwe Dyantyi to send him over.
