The U.S hosted the World Cup previously in 1994 while Mexico hosted it in 1970 and 1986.

The "United" bid received 134 of the 203 votes cast at the FIFA Congress in Moscow, while Morocco polled 65.

In qualification for the 2018 World Cup, the United States of America surprisingly finished fifth in a group of six countries in the fifth round of qualification, only ahead of Trinidad & Tobago.

Chief among those is US President Donald Trump, whose "America First" approach might score well with his electoral base but may have made the United bid's task harder than it could ever have imagined.

Canada, Mexico, Morocco and the United States were exempt, while Ghana was absent after the country's government said it had disbanded its football association amid allegations of "widespread" corruption. Canada has never hosted a men's World Cup, though it was the site of the 2015 Women's World Cup.

Although it would be the first tournament to be hosted by three nations, the vast majority of games will be held in the US.

Wednesday's vote offers hope that this could lead to an entirely new generation of Canadian youngsters taking up soccer, which could have long-term benefits for the men's team.

"I go back all the way to growing up in London and my start in the game". The trio released the official song of the World Cup "Live It Up" that attracted a mixed and divided response from the fans.

Lincoln Financial Field was prominent in North America's bid, as one of 23 potential host venues.

Typically, the host nation gets an automatic berth in the World Cup.

The combined North American bid of the United States, Mexico and Canada was awarded the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Wednesday, moving Baltimore one step closer toward possibly hosting a match in the quadrennial soccer competition.

The head of World Cup security, Alexei Lavrishchev, said last week that his control center stood ready against threats, but allowed for looser enforcement of small offenses than usual due to the number of foreign fans expected in Russian Federation. The tournament will still take place over 32 days.

Canada, meanwhile, did not even make it that far, finishing third behind Mexico and Honduras in the fourth round.

Of the 16 host cities, 10 will be in the United States while the remainder will be split evenly between Canada and Mexico.

The World Cup host usually receives automatic entry into the tournament, but Federation Internationale de Football Association has yet to announce whether it will extend this pass to all three host nations in 2026.

"This is a monumental victory for the Concacaf family, as the United Bid exemplified the strong collaboration, beyond politics and business, that now exists in our region".

That means Toronto, Edmonton and Montreal will host some of the games.

The U.S. metro areas in the running are Atlanta (Mercedes-Benz Stadium), Baltimore (M&T Bank Stadium), Boston (Gillette Stadium), Cincinnati (Paul Brown Stadium), Dallas (AT&T Stadium), Denver (Sports Authority Field), Houston (NRG Stadium), Kansas City (Arrowhead Stadium), Los Angeles (Rose Bowl and the new National Football League stadium), Miami (Hard Rock Stadium), Nashville (Nissan Stadium), New York (MetLife Stadium), Orlando (Camping World Stadium), Philadelphia (Lincoln Financial Field), San Jose (Levi's Stadium), Seattle (Century Link Field) and Washington (FedEx Field).

The Mexican candidate cities are Guadalajara, Mexico City and Monterrey.

The only team to have won the finals before are four-time champions Italy, who failed to qualify from UEFA's play-offs after finishing behind Spain in their group.
