Air strikes on a village in Idlib killed at least 44 people overnight, the highest death toll in a single attack on the region this year, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Friday.

The bombing raids hit a string of towns and villages in the northwest province of Idlib, which is nearly entirely controlled by various jihadist and hardline rebels.

Idlib, which lies on the border with Turkey, has seen its population balloon to around 2 million people in recent years as fighters and civilians evacuated from other opposition areas are dumped there.

Observatory chief Rami Abdel Rahman said strikes had also hit near a children's hospital, which was forced to shut down.

The air strikes came a day after militants from Al Qaeda's former Syrian affiliate launched an attack on Fuaa and Kafraya, two villages held by the regime but cut off by hardline forces.

Takfiri terrorists have attacked the besieged Shia-majority Syrian towns of Kefraya and al-Foua, sparking deadly clashes with pro-Damascus fighters, a UK-based monitoring group says.

Fuaa and Kafraya are the only two places in Syria now designated as besieged by the United Nations after the government recaptured the Yarmuk Palestinian camp in southern Damascus.

Around 10,000 people, a lot of them Shiite Muslims, are estimated to live in the two villages.

United Nations chief calls for investigation of Syria strikes

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres on Sunday called for an investigation into the the airstrikes that reportedly left dozens dead in the village of Zardana in Syria's Idlib governorate, his spokesperson said.

Panos Moumtzis, the United Nations regional humanitarian coordinator, called on major powers to broker a settlement to end the war and avoid a bloodbath in Idlib.

Last year, Turkey, Iran and Russian Federation agreed in Astana to establish de-escalation zones in the northern province of Idlib and parts of neighboring Latakia, Hama and Aleppo.

Panos Moumtzis, UN Regional Humanitarian Coordinator for the Syria Crisis, informs to the media on latest developments on humanitarian access in Syria, during a press conference, at the European headquarters of the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland, Monday, June 11, 2018.

"We worry about 2.5 million people becoming displaced towards Turkey".

He explained that, due to the increase in armed clashes, during the first four months of the year more than 920,000 Syrian citizens had to leave their homes, the largest increase in the number of displaced persons since the conflict began seven years ago.

HTS and its allies control about 60 per cent of Idlib.

Since Russia intervened in its support in 2015, the government has regained control of around half of the country.
