Raptors promoting assistant Nick Nurse to head coach

Noah Ferguson | 13 June, 2018, 02:39

His path to an National Basketball Association head coaching job is unconventional, to say the least.

Nurse, 50, replaces Dwane Casey who was sacked last month after the Raptors were swept in the conference semifinals by the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Toronto's coaching search reportedly had narrowed down to Nurse and San Antonio assistant coach Ettore Messina.

According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, Nick Nurse will be the franchises next head coach. Nurse emphasized more man and ball movement as well as outside shooting, helping the team go from last in assists the year before to sixth in 2017-18. Nevermind that Casey is a legitimate contender for Coach of the Year-General Manager Masai Ujiri felt the team needed a new leader.

Nurse came to Toronto fresh off of a NBA Development League championship with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers and also won a league championship with Iowa, a D-League coach of the year award and worked extensively in Britain. He also won two rings at the minor-league level. The Pistons lured Casey with a five-year deal that was announced Monday.

Lewenberg noted that if the Raptors passed on Nurse as head coach, they risked losing him altogether as he finished atop a Yahoo poll from early April among executives that tabbed him as the top head coaching prospect among National Basketball Association assistants.
