According to the German automaker, the name (pronounced tie-con) can be roughly translated as "lively young horse", and references the leaping horse that has been present on Porsche's emblem since 1952. Porsche also added that the vehicle would be able to cover long distances. This electric vehicle not only signifies the German carmaker's entry in the zero emission pure electric mobility sector, but the auto is also expected to bring many first ever features for the brand.

The Porsche Mission E concept - first shown at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2015 - has a near-600bhp powertrain consisting of lithium-ion batteries and two electric motors, one for each axle.

Porsche reckons the car's two electric motors will produce a system output of over 447kW, and accelerate the sedan from zero to 100km/h in under 3.5 seconds.

When it arrives next year, the Porsche Taycan is expected to give the Tesla Model S a run for its money, not only in range and performance, but also when it comes to quality and - perhaps crucially for Porsche - driver involvement. Macan is taken from the Indonesian word for tiger, while Cayenne denotes fieriness.

Porsche plans to invest more than €6-billion in electromobility by 2022, doubling the expenditure that the company had originally planned.

The Porsche Taycan is set to begin production in 2019, and will go up against other pure electric vehicles such as the Tesla Model S. Furthermore, expect other variants and derivatives of the Taycan to be produced in the future as Porsche has invested Euro 500 million into the model name.

At the Porsche headquarters in Zuffenhausen, a new paint shop, dedicated assembly area for the Taycan and a conveyor bridge for transporting the painted bodies and drive units to the final assembly area are being constructed.

The existing engine plant is being expanded to manufacture electric drives and the body shop will also be developed.

Production of the Taycan is creating around 1,200 new jobs in Zuffenhausen alone.

When creating the Mission E show auto, Porsche drew from experience gained during development of its Le Mans-winning 919 Hybrid race vehicle.

2019 Porsche Taycan: What does it mean for auto buyers? Porsche named the Panamera after the Carrera Panamericana long-distance race. PCNA employs over 300 people who provide parts, service, marketing, and training for 189 dealers.
