Money talks for Federation Internationale de Football Association as Morocco pays price for Infantino’s expansion plan

Noah Ferguson | 13 June, 2018, 23:21

On Wednesday in Moscow, the trio bid of the United States, Mexico and Canada beat Morocco in a vote to earn the hosting rights to the 2026 World Cup.

The U.S. last hosted World Cup games in 1996, Mexico last hosted in 1986 and Canada has never hosted men's World Cup matches.

The North American bid beat competition from Morocco, which was hoping to become just the second African country to host soccer's biggest worldwide tournament.

Morocco, on the other hand, promised a "European" World Cup in Africa, playing on its proximity to Europe and an appeal to take the tournament back to the African continent for just the second time.

"It just made a lot of sense to accommodate and expand a tournament have all three countries host and really kind of spread the football love all around North America", Shanks added.

President Donald Trump has interfered in the voting process, much to FIFA's chagrin.

Of the 80 games, 60 will be played in the United States with 10 each in Canada and Mexico.

To cut down on travel, the USA -led bid proposed having teams play all their games in the same regional areas.

The World Cup host usually receives automatic entry into the tournament, but Federation Internationale de Football Association has yet to announce whether it will extend this pass to all three host nations in 2026.

The North American bid had been the favorite.

Trudeau told reporters in Ottawa: "It's an opportunity to bring the world together and highlight how well things work between Canada, Mexico and the United States". Morocco had said it would need to spend $16 billion on infrastructure for the competition, including on 14 stadiums, whereas only six of North American stadiums need refurbishment.

US Soccer President Carlos Cordeiro speaks at the Fifa Congress in Moscow, Russia ahead of the vote.

It will be decided at FIFA Congress in June 2019 whether the three host nations all receive automatic qualification for the tournament. The bid also expects record ticket and hospitality revenue. Before the vote, some had suggested that a "Trump effect" was harming the United States' chances, saying the president's quarrels internationally were putting off some countries. "The merits of the bid, we feel we have a compelling proposal". "Why should we be supporting these countries when they don't support us (including at the United Nations)?" he wrote.

It's unclear at the moment how travel will shake out and how far teams will have to travel for matches. "But hopefully we can have the most successful World Cup of all time and it needs all people from all three of our countries". Trudeau responded by saying that Canadians would "not be pushed around".

It's not yet clear whether the US, Canada and Mexico will all automatically qualify for the 2026 World Cup or if they'll have to compete with other Concacaf countries for a spot.

A number of the grounds available to the bid would, however, allow for games to be played under cover in a climate-controlled environment.
