English FA Confirm EPL Winter Break From 2019/2020 Season

Premier League Transfers Arsenal and Manchester United confirm their first official summer signings English FA Confirm EPL Winter Break From 2019/2020 Season
Noah Ferguson | 13 June, 2018, 02:13

The break - which falls well short of those taken in mainland European leagues - will give the 20 Premier League teams a weekend off football in February beginning in the 2019/20 campaign.

He told the FA's website: "This is a significant moment for English football and one that we believe will greatly benefit both club and country".

The three-year deal, which represents the first time that Premier League TV rights have been acquired by a non-traditional broadcaster, will feature every club in the top flight across two full rounds of 20 matches per season, including Bank Holiday fixtures.

"This is not seen to be a way and won't be [of making money]", said Martin Glenn, the chief executive of the Football Association.

Discussions have been going on for "several months", Premier League executive chairman Richard Scudamore said.

"Today's announcement proves that football can come together for the good of the game,"Glenn added. As we head into summer global tournaments in the future we are sure that this mid-season break will prove to be a valuable addition for our players".

"We very much understand, and support, the requirement and wishes of our colleagues across the game to introduce a mid-season player break".

FA chief executive Martin Glenn revealed while addressing councillors on May 30 that an agreement was close, and now the adjustment has been confirmed, and he hopes it will have a positive impact on England's senior team.

In a statement, EFL chief executive Shaun Harvey said he supported the creation of a mid-season break for the top flight but "it is now impractical even if it was desirable for the EFL" to do likewise because of the scheduling challenges of playing 46-game seasons and play-offs.
