Dixons Carphone hit with major data breach

Dixons Carphone hit with major data breach Dixons Carphone hit with major data breach

The company, which trades under names including Currys PC World, Carphone Warehouse and Dixons Travel, says that two separate incidents have led to the theft of around 1.2 million general user data files and a whopping 5.9 million card details. Weve taken action to close off this unauthorized access and though we have now no evidence of fraud as a result of these incidents, we are taking this extremely seriously.

"While Dixons has said that there is no evidence of fraud taking place, now the data is in the criminal sphere, it's unlikely to be long before it starts being shopped around amongst criminals, with ensuing phishing and bruteforce attacks launched".

Because the data breach dates back to a year ago it will be dealt with by the ICO under the powers of the Data Protection Act 1998 and not the European Union General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) which went into effect on May 25.

Chief executive Alex Baldock admitted the group had "fallen short" of its responsibility to protect customer data.

It said 5.8 million of these cards had chip and pin protection and the data accessed contained neither pin codes, card verification values nor any authentication data that would enable cardholder identification or purchases to be made.

"We are extremely disappointed and sorry for any upset this may cause", he said.

However, an additional 105,000 cards from outside the European Union - with no chip-and-pin protection - have been compromised as part of the breach. We promptly launched an investigation, engaged leading cyber security experts and added extra security measures to our systems.

The National Cyber Security Centre has warned people to be mindful of potential fraud and follow-up campaigns.

In a statement put out today it says a review of its systems and data unearthed the data breach.

"Anyone concerned about fraud or lost data should contact Action Fraud and we recommend that people are vigilant against any suspicious activity on their bank accounts".

Given the small number of affected cards and the fact that personal data did not leave the network, it's unlikely the firm will be in for a major GDPR fine, unless it emerges that the hackers took advantage of serious deficiencies in the firm's cyber-defenses.
