Aeon Flux returning to MTV as live-action series

This time around, it'll be all about the police state, "biohacking", and superheroics as the heroine becomes the legendary Aeon Flux.

Aeon Flux was initially a series of shorts from Peter Chung that aired in 1991 and 1992. The Viacom-owned network is developing a live-action reboot of the 1990s animated series, from Jeff Davis (Teen Wolf, Criminal Minds) and The Walking Dead/Fear The Walking Dead's Gale Anne Hurd, Deadline has confirmed. This series is just the latest MTV show from the past to be revived for a reboot, with the network now developing revivals of Jersey Shore, Yo MTV Raps, Total Request Live and The Real World. Chung's animated series was groundbreaking stuff, seemingly building upon the thematic focus of the renegade animation found in efforts like 1981's Heavy Metal, except put through a stylised cyberpunk lens that - in 1991 - was considered mind-blowing. Davis also wrote a new version of War of the Worlds in 2016, that is said to be still in contention for a series order at MTV, and he's also working on a brand new incarnation of Teen Wolf for MTV, which is said to be a new anthology series that could potentially bring back characters from the original show.

The 2005 feature starring Theron and co-starring Frances McDormand and produced by MTV Films, did not fare well either critically or financially, earning just $52.3 million worldwide. But after the critical and commercial disappointment of the big-screen Aeon Flux, MTV is having another go at it - this time, on its home turf. The series grew a cult following, and returned to TV a year later with five short-form episodes and again in 1995 as a 10-episode half-hour animated series. The movie has a miserable 9% on Rotten Tomatoes and couldn't even make back its $62 million budget at the box office.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, MTV will be changing the plot slightly. Is this a good move by MTV, or are they setting themselves up for failure?
