With the victory, Vettel took a one-point lead in the Formula One standings over Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton, who was fifth.

It's Vettel's 50th career win and his third of the season.

Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen qualified fifth fastest and will be joined on the third row by Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo, victor in Monaco two weeks ago and the last man to beat Hamilton to victory in Canada.

Nico Hulkenberg and Carlos Sainz of Renault, Esteban Ocon of Force India and Charles Leclerc of Sauber also finished in the points.

Ricciardo said after qualifying the strategy call will allow him to be aggressive in the early stages of the race and give him the chance to gain crucial track position on his rivals.

Vettel grabbed a Ferrari flag and waved it on his way to the podium.

"It was a bit different, it was a bit mixed today so I'm not entirely happy with the feel inside the auto yet". It means a lot. Obviously, Max showed some pace, so I think there's a bit for us to learn.

It was the first win by a Ferrari on Circuit Gilles Villeneuve since Michael Schumacher's triumph in 2004.

The race began in near-perfect conditions with an air temperature of 20 degrees Celsius and the track at 45 as the lights went out.

After clinching his fourth pole position of the season, Vettel was delighted with the response after a tough Friday practice in Canada.

Hamilton stayed fourth ahead of Ricciardo who made quick work of passing Raikkonen before, after only half a lap, a heavy collision between Brendon Hartley's Toro Rosso and local hero Lance Stroll's Williams.

Both men were unhurt. At the end I was just praying the vehicle stays fine, nothing would break.

The teams selected the least sets of the hypersoft for the Montreal weekend of any team, and both Hamilton and team-mate Valtteri Bottas have three fewer sets available than all of the Red Bull and Ferrari drivers. With a new engine upgrade fitted to Vettel's auto this weekend, Ferrari was expected to be one of the favourites in Canada but Vettel was not happy with his performance after he was restricted to just 17 laps in second practice due to vehicle issues at the start of the session.

Hamilton had gone into the meeting in Montreal with a 14-point advantage but leaves one point behind Vettel, a vast swing he would not have anticipated from one of his favourite circuits. "No power, no gears", said the Spaniard.

A grandstand finish looked possible until Bottas ran off at Turn One and took to the grass before recovering.

Vettel had no such trouble, leaving the jostling behind him as he steered through the 4.36km track named for the Ferrari driver and Montreal native who earned his first Formula One victory here 40 years ago.
