Want to pardon Muhammad Ali, says Trump

Muhammad Ali Muhammad Ali

President Donald Trump on Friday said he was considering granting a posthumous pardon to boxing great Muhammad Ali.

In June 1967, Ali was convicted in federal court for violating selective service laws refusing the Vietnam War draft.

When Ali appealed his case to the U.S. Supreme Court for the final time in 1971, liberal stalwart Justice William Brennan convinced his colleagues to hear the case.

Earlier this week, Mr Trump commuted the life sentence of Alice Johnson, whose cause was championed by reality television star Kim Kardashian West.

Trump in recent weeks has reveled in his power to pardon.

He continued, "I'm thinking about Muhammad Ali".

But there's a little problem with offering to pardon Muhammad Ali: he doesn't actually need a pardon. I thought Alice yesterday was handsome. We spoke with Khalilah Ali - who was married to Muhammad from '67 to '76 - and she was shocked when she watched Trump tell the media he was considering pardoning Ali. presumably for his conviction for resisting the draft in 1971.

Last month, Trump pardoned the late boxer Jack Johnson, who was convicted for transporting a white woman across state lines over 100 years ago.

Trump told reporters that he was thinking "very seriously" about pardoning him.

The problem with the President's sentiment is Ali has already had his conviction overturned - not once, but twice. "I want to do people who are unfairly treated like an Alice". Given the high court's action, "there is no conviction from which a pardon is needed".

"This was quite a surprise to everybody this morning when we heard about it", he said Friday during a phone interview.

Trump told reporters as he left the White House for a meeting with in Canada with USA allies that his team was “looking at literally thousands of names” of people for potential pardons because they were treated unfairly or their sentences are too long. He died in 2016.

"President Trump has spent much of his first 18 months in office degrading National Football League players who protest police brutality and racial injustice". "I would get more thrill out of pardoning people that nobody knew".

Trump was also asked on Friday if he was thinking about pardoning O.J. Simpson.

"My conscience won't let me go shoot my brother, or some darker people, or some poor hungry people in the mud for big powerful America", he said at the time.
