Ireland's Dan Martin and Britain's Geraint Thomas were edged out in a dramatic sprint as Julian Alaphilippe claimed victory in stage four of the Criterium du Dauphine.

Ultimately, it was Quick-Step Floors' Alaphilippe who crossed the line in front in a time of 4:26.58 with UAE Team Emirates' Martin and Sky's Thomas in hot pursuit.

Martin moved to 20 in the overall classification at 2.40 minutes from new race leader Gianni Moscon of Sky.

Kwiatkowski lost 17 seconds but is still second overall, six seconds behind Moscon, with Thomas completing the Sky trifecta atop the GC on the same time as the Pole.

"I think these four days are the hardest four days I've raced in a one-week stage race", said Thomas.

The 32-year-old Thomas, victor of Paris-Nice in 2016, is coming into form at just the right time with the Tour de France a month away.

So, I chose to work as hard as possible for a stage victory.

Adam Yates, who'd made much of the early running in the stage, came home in third, 15 seconds behind Martin. "I'll enjoy tomorrow, or I'll try to enjoy it in the jersey and defend it but it's super hard". Martin took second place ahead of Thomas. "I'm still waiting for the Tour de France, I'm not in top condition, but this is a good sign for July".

It will culminate in another summit finish.
