Allies confront Trump with trade numbers at tense G7 summit

Bennie Garza | 09 Июня, 2018, 05:37

Donald Trump has been busy attacking US allies ahead of the G7 summit which begins today in the town of La Malbaie in Quebec.

They will pressure the US President Donald Trump to reverse the tariffs he has imposed on their imports of steel and aluminum, sparking fears of a trade war that could undermine global economic growth.

Mr Trump is expected to face stern opposition from the majority of the group over his protectionist policies on trade, including harsh new tariffs on steel and aluminium which would hit the European Union and Canada.

It was only six weeks ago when U.S. President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron grinned, laughed, and hugged their way through a state visit in Washington, showing all the signs of two leaders with a genuine friendship. Trump said before departing from the White House for the G-7 summit in Canada.

Speaking ahead of the two-day event in Canada today, Mr Tusk said this year's summit would be "even more challenging" than 2017's - an event which he had previously billed as the most hard in years.

But they also made it clear that won't keep them from pushing Trump to end the tariffs, which they brand as illegal and bad for everyone's economy. The EU and Canada have both announced retaliatory tariffs. Earlier this week, Merkel said the group is defined by its members' respect of worldwide law, and Russia's 2014 annexation of Crimea was a "flagrant breach" of that.

"We had a very direct and open discussion", Macron told reporters Friday of his one-on-one with Trump.

And finally, a promise: "I am heading for Canada and the G-7 for talks that will mostly center on the long time unfair trade practiced against the United States".

That comment has Trump squarely offside with this fellow G7 leaders, including Canada, who view Russia's annexation of Ukraine's Crimean Peninsula and its meddling in western elections as a major worldwide security concern.

Mr. Trump's stunning remarks on Russian Federation added to already fraught talks at the G7 and leave him more isolated.

The summit begins Friday in La Malbaie, in Charlevoix, north of Quebec, and runs until Saturday, when Trump flies on to Singapore.

One other G-7 leader, Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, said in a tweet he supports Trump's suggestion.

Ahead of the summit, the White House held a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in an attempt to improve trade relations based on fairness and reciprocity between the two nations. President Vladimir Putin's occupation of parts of the Ukraine in 2014, his illiberal tactics of rule, his crushing of the independent media, and a fall in oil prices made Russian Federation less and less likely as a member of a club of "industrialized democracies", and Moscow's membership was suspended in 2014.

Tension has been building over a year of policymaking that has distanced the United States from traditional allies, including by Trump's decisions to withdraw the USA from the Paris climate accord and the Iran nuclear agreement.

In Trump's first public remarks on Canadian soil, he once again reiterated his desire for separate trade deals with Canada and Mexico, instead of the North American Free Trade Agreement.
