President Donald Trump considers pardon for Muhammad Ali

President Donald Trump speaks to reporters before leaving the White House in Washington Friday President Donald Trump considers pardon for Muhammad Ali

President Donald Trump said Friday he may posthumously pardon heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali, who was convicted in 1967 after refusing military service in Vietnam - even though that conviction was overturned by the Supreme Court four years later.

"I am thinking about Muhammad Ali", Trump told reporters at the White House shortly before departing to the Group of Seven nations summit in Quebec City. After his conviction, he was also stripped of his heavyweight boxing crown.

Last week, almost a decade after complaining about the casting of Khloe Kardashian on his Celebrity Apprentice reality TV series instead of her "hot" sister, Kim visited the White House to make the case for pardoning grandmother Alice Johnson, who was serving a life sentence on drug offenses.

Ali, who was known as Cassius Clay before converting to Islam, was sentenced to five years in jail and fined $10,000 for refusing to enter the USA military when he was drafted during the Vietnam War.

"We have 3,000 names". Asked about potential pardons, Trump said, "I'm thinking about Muhammad Ali".

So when Trump says he may pardon Ali, it's unclear what he's talking about.

Muhammad Ali, who passed away in 2016, was one of the most influential and inspiring American historical figures of the twentieth century.

Ali's legal fight ended in 1971, when the Supreme Court ruled in his favour, reversing his conviction on a technicality. He added, "The pardons are a very positive things for a president". Ali was born Cassius Clay, and changed his name after converting to Islam in the 1960s.

Ron Tweel, an attorney for Ali, released a statement saying they "appreciate" the president's "sentiment, but a pardon is unnecessary".

"We heard what he was contemplating and it needed a response", he said.

Trump clearly pleased with the publicity he's gained with his recent celebrity pardons, made a point this morning of informing reporters he's got more up his sleeve.
