Garbaine Muguruza rolls over Maria Sharapova

Spain's Garbine Muguruza clenches her fist after scoring a point against Russia's Maria Sharapova during their quarterfinal match of the French Open tennis tournament at the Roland Garros stadium in Paris France Wednesday Garbaine Muguruza rolls over Maria Sharapova

Garbine Muguruza thrashed Maria Sharapova 6-2, 6-1 to reach the French Open semi-finals yesterday, condemning the Russian to her worst Grand Slam defeat in more than six years.

Ten-time Roland Garros champion Rafael Nadal lost his first set in Paris since 2015, when 11th seed Diego Schwartzman of Argentina broke Nadal's serve multiple times to take the first set 6-4.

Garbine Muguruza converted two out of seven break point opportunities as she won the opening set 6-2 against an error-prone Maria Sharapova.

"Well, I think it would be odd for me not to include someone that I have competed against for so many years", she said, responding to Williams' barb that she was surprised to feature so frequently in the book.

Halep then regrouped herself to triumph in the second set 6-3.

Muguruza has not dropped a set in this year's tournament and dominated Sharapova with booming groundstrokes and superb returning that earned six breaks.

First, she'll have to get through the current No. 1, Simona Halep. Still chasing a maiden major trophy, top-ranked Simona Halep takes on 12th-seeded Angelique Kerber. Muguruza won the French Open in 2016, then Wimbledon previous year. The victor earns a berth in the final at Roland Garros - plus the No 1 ranking that now belongs to Halep.

But it was the German who started the stronger, out-hitting her rival with lethal accuracy, to win the first four games as Halep struggled to find her serving rhythm and peppered the tramlines with unforced errors. I just want to play as I did today, and as I did every day.

By the end of the first set, the five-time Major victor had won just eight points against the Muguruza serve and failed to carve out a single break-point.

Sharapova never really got going after double faulting three times in the opening game on Court Philippe Chatrier, losing to third seed Muguruza to the first time in their four encounters. Well, she's No. 1.

Sharapova's eagerly-awaited fourth-round clash with Serena Williams never even made it on court Monday as her American nemesis pulled out an hour before the scheduled start with an injury.

Sharapova was making her comeback at Roland Garros, having been refused a wildcard past year, shortly after her return from a 15-month drugs ban.

On Court Suzanne Lenglen, Marin Cilic and Juan Martin del Potro were level at 5-5 in a tight first set tiebreak.

40 - The number of years since an Italian male player made it to a Grand Slam semifinal. Two-time French Open victor Sharapova had her serve broken six times, hitting six double faults making a total 27 unforced errors.

In the other women's quarterfinal, No. 1 Simona Halep takes on former No. 1 Angelique Kerber in a rematch of their epic Australian Open semifinal in January. Halep is a three-time runner-up at majors, including in Paris in 2014 and 2017.
