CDC report reveals more than 45,000 Americans took their own lives in 2016

Patty Aguilar | 08 June, 2018, 21:24

Those trends apply to almost every segment of the USA population: Suicide rates have increased in 44 states, among all racial and ethnic groups and in every age range except adults older than 75. Percentage increases over this time ranged from just under 6 percent in DE to over 57 percent in North Dakota.

Twenty-five states had suicide-rate increases of more than 30 percent.

"This is a major public health problem but we know that prevention programs work and can be effective in reducing this tragedy", Dr. Anne Schuchat, CDC principal deputy director, told Fox News.

A range of strategies could help prevent suicides, from expanding access to mental and behavioral health care to improving education around individual coping skills and institutional supports, the report says.

MA experienced a 35 percent increase in suicides from 1999 to 2016, but its suicide rate remains comparatively low: 10 per 100,000 people in 2014-2016, compared with 15.4 per 100,000 for the nation as a whole.

The analysis found that slightly more than half the people who had died by suicide did not have any known mental-health condition.

Problems with relationships, physical health, money, jobs or housing can lead people to take their own lives, the report stated.

In 2016 alone, about 45,000 lives were lost to suicide.

Rates varied widely across the country during the study period, from 6.9 per 100,000 residents per year killing themselves in Washington, D.C., to 29.2 per 100,000 residents in Montana - the highest in the country, followed by Alaska and Wyoming.

In Hawaii, rates went up about 18-percent from 1999 to 2016. In Nevada, the only state that saw a decrease, the rate fell by 1 percent.

This is part of its larger call on entire communities - beginning at the family level and expanding all the way up to society as a whole - to come together to watch out for suicidal behavior and make help more accessible.

However, he said, better records are being kept on suicide statistics.

The data also shows that about 22%-24% of people who died by suicide, regardless of whether or not they had a diagnosed mental health condition, disclosed their intent at some point, underscoring the importance of taking such comments seriously. "Suicide is a public health crisis when you look at the numbers, and they keep going up".

Although suicide is often attributed exclusively to mental health conditions, it is rarely caused by a single factor, the researchers said. Gun suicide attempts end in death about 85 percent of the time, compared to less than 5 percent for intentional drug overdoses.

While the study emphasizes the need for more prevention resources, predicting suicides can be hard.

Firearm ownership is common, and Delaney said "the literature is getting pretty strong" that states with easier access to guns have higher suicide rates.

The Associated Press contributed to this story. Ask them if they are thinking about suicide 2. Telling someone you care and want to help is always a good idea, and so is letting them do most of the talking about how they're feeling, without judging, shaming, or threatening.

For immediate help if you are in a crisis, call the toll-free National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255), which is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
