Arteta has been heavily touted with landing the role at Arsenal since it was announced that Arsene Wenger would be leaving the club.

As revealed by Goal, Wenger could even move away from club management and take a director of football role, or perhaps a national team job.

Arteta has risen to the top of the list to take the hot seat and his growing reputation while being assistant to Pep Guardiola at Manchester City has caught the attention of Arsenal CEO Ivan Gazidis.

The former French Gunner has been linked with the vacant position at the Emirates but Vieira, now head coach of MLS side New York City FC, has apparently been left "disappointed" after being contacted by Arsenal.

"I have seen the shortlist: Allegri, Carlo Ancelotti, Mikel Arteta - why not?"

Regardless, Pires believes his former teammate remains the ideal candidate to step into Wenger's shoes. I think all of them could manage Arsenal.

'With Vieira - and this is only my opinion - yes. Now in charge of New York City, Vieira is said to be mystified over whether he has ever been under serious consideration.

Patrick Vieira is understood to have viewed his approach as a 'token gesture', and The Telegraph reports that Arsenal are now planning to accelerate Arteta's appointment after the Spaniard was left as their only serious candidate.

"However, he has a very good profile to replace Arsene Wenger, because he knows football, he knows the Premier League and of course, he knows Arsenal".
