Google Rolls Back Change That Broke Web-Based Game Audio In Chrome

Google rolls back autoplay ban in Chrome 66 after borking web-based games Chrome is getting too clever for some

The temporary change removes the autoplay policy from Chrome 66 for the Web Audio API, though the policy remains in effect for projects that use "video" and "audio" HTML tags. "This change does not affect most media playback on the web, as the autoplay policy will remain in effect for video and audio ," wrote Google Chrome product manager John Pallett this week, responding to dozens of complaints from developers.

As such, version 66.0.3359.181 of Chrome for Mac, Windows, and Linux today removes the autoplay policy for this API. Yet with an adjustment of such potentially high impact landing in Chrome 66, clearly more communication was needed.

The policy will be re-applied to the Web Audio API in Chrome 70 (October). "If you are honest in your claim that the side effects of the policy were unintended and unwanted, you should commit-in clear, straightforward language-to finding other alternatives which do not break vast swathes of cultural work that was developed and distributed on the open web".

Google scaled back a new auto-play policy in the latest version of its Chrome web browser, meant to stop unwanted video ads with sound from serving up and playing without notice. It is working to "improve things for users and developers".

The developer community has made their frustrations clear and the hiccup has found its way to the CRBug tracker and the folks at Chromium have taken notice.

"We are still exploring options to enable great audio experiences for users, and we will post more detailed thoughts on that topic here later", Pallett added. Some feel that Google is restricting the spirit of a free and open web buy forcing their standards on the world's most popular browser. Having that kind of status quo failsafe in place could easily lessen the motivation to work out those "non-trivial user interface challenges" in a timely manner.

Unless users had whitelisted a site or previously interacted with it, Chrome's blocking feature stops one of the most irritating elements of web browsing: the sudden playing of loud videos. Then, as you browse the web, Chrome updates that list as it learns where you play media and where you don't.
