We could be living in a multiverse with alien neighbours, suggests study

It challenges the belief that our universe has been lucky to have only a small amount of dark energy that enabled it to host life, among many universes that could not.

But a new study suggests this limit is far more generous than experts once thought, meaning that the conditions needed to sustain existence may not be that rare.

Ever since then, the debate around whether many universes might exist as part of a larger multiverse - and if they could harbour life - has been burning in modern cosmology.

Using simulations of the cosmos, researchers led by Durham University found life is still possible with far more dark energy than is present in our universe.

Radio cosmologists from around the globe have been stuck to their sets for a considerable length of time to tune in to that one sound from some place in space which would demonstrate that an outsider life, adequately propelled, exists some place in our universe.

"For many physicists, the unexplained but seemingly special amount of dark energy in our Universe is a frustrating puzzle", said Jaime Salcido from Durham University in Britain.

He included: "Our simulations reveal that even if there was far more dark energy and even hardly any in deep space then it would just have a very little result on star and planet development.". The members of the research team were based in England Australia and the Netherlands.

The simulations were produced under the Evolution and Assembly of GaLaxies and their Environments (EAGLE) project.

To reach this conclusion, the team used a huge computer simulation and finally showed that if there were other universes, they would probably have the same life. The research does not tend to entirely falsify the Multiverse idea, however, it just says that tiny quantity of dark energy present in the universe that humans live in could be explained better by the help of a natural law, which is yet to be discovered.

"Even increasing dark energy many hundreds of times might not be enough to make a dead universe".

The findings of the research team have been published in two related papers in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

The main theory regarding dark energy asserts that our universe was created with a brief burst that allowed it to expand at a rapid pace.

However, the possibility that we can even extend beyond our own universe is very low-causing many people to hope that we can eventually find Alien life closer to home.

But researchers behind the new study said their finding casts doubt on a multiverse explaining the value of the mysterious substance of dark energy.

The multiverse theory was first advanced in the 80s.

"The formation of stars in a universe is a battle between the attraction of gravity, and the repulsion of dark energy", saidRichard Bower of Durham University.
