The new S60 will be based on Volvo's in-house developed SPA platform, which also underpins the company's new 90 Series and 60 Series cars.
Back in February Volvo Cars CEO Håkan Samuelsson confirmed the company has stopped allocating capital to the development of new internal combustion engines, both diesel and gasoline.
Hakan Samuelsson explains that the future of Volvo "is electric and we will no longer develop a new generation of diesel engines".
Volvo, owned by China's Zhejiang Geely, has said it plans to offer only hybrid or full-electric motors on every new model launched from 2019.
Although diesels now emit more Carbon dioxide per kilometer than their petrol counterparts, Samuelson said hybridisation will help match figures achieved by diesels. In a recent statement it confirmed there will be no diesel option for the new S60.
The upcoming S60 sedan will come powered by a mix of four cylinder petrol Drive-E engines and hybrid powertrains. The S60's estate sibling, the V60, was launched earlier this year in Stockholm.

As mentioned above, the new S60 will be the first new Volvo without a diesel option. Mild hybrid options will debut next year.
But this is not going to happen overnight, as Volvo expects fully-electric cars to account for just 50 percent of its global sales by 2025 and even that estimation is perhaps a bit ambitious.
The decision to make a diesel-free S60 doesn't affect Americans. Samuelsson reiterated the company's commitment Wednesday with the announcement of the diesel death.
Production of the new S60 will start this fall at Volvo Cars' brand new manufacturing facility outside Charleston, South Carolina.
The carmaker is also hoping to have at least 50 per cent new auto sales by 2025 to be electric vehicles.
