HTC is hoping to change all that, as it told The Next Web that it's developing a new Android phone that will be powered by blockchain. The idea behind the phone isn't so much about mining for cryptocurrency itself, but acting as a node for a native blockchain network that can be used to facilitate cryptocurrency trading amongst the phone's users.

HTC has announced that it is now working on a new Android device that will be powered, in part, by blockchain technology.

HTC has not shared any release date or price of the phone but it has been now listed on its website for bookings.

Touting 20 years of experience in mobile, HTC's device will have hardware support for cryptocurrencies.

As per the listing on HTC India website, the company is working with multiple protocols with the intent of interoperability between blockchains.

The new Exodus smartphone will support both Bitcoin and Ethereum as well as other cryptocurrencies with its universal wallet, secure hardware, and decentralized apps.

HTC has roped back the creator of its virtual reality headset Vive, Phil Chen, who will be responsible for all blockchain and cryptocurrency related initiatives of HTC including Exodus.

HTC's bid for elevated smartphone security comes at a time of peak scrutiny for security and data privacy: Facebook's ongoing Cambridge Analytica scandal. Samsung last month was reported to be building blockchain network, but for its own global supply management. From a vague outline, the rear of the phone looks similar to most HTC phones today. Others, including Huawei, have announced that it will also be making a Blockchain smartphone. The company has also included a few advanced security features and claims the phone is virtually "tamper proof". So far, there is no word about when we might see the Exodus, but Sirin's Finney is now expected to launch in October. The phone features 128GB built-in storage and 6GB RAM.
