Three years ago, there was a class action lawsuit linked to carbon monoxide deaths and keyless cars. Keyless ignition allows drivers to start their cars with the press of a button while an electronic key fob remains in their pocket or purse. Unfortunately, there's a unsafe downside, which The New York Timesrecently discovered.
A keyless vehicle has a key fob that, when in close proximity to the auto, transmits a signal and allows the driver to start the vehicle with a touch of a button. This can have dire consequences, as carbon monoxide can fill up a home and silently kill those inside.
At least 28 people have died from carbon monoxide poisoning as a result of drivers who forgot to turn off the ignition in their keyless cars, the New York Times reported. But weaned from the habit of turning and removing a key to shut off the motor, drivers - particularly older ones - can be lulled by newer, quieter engines into mistakenly thinking that it has stopped running. Different vehicle manufacturers have different sets of safety systems. Dozens others have gotten sick, some left with brain damage.
More than half of the 17 million vehicles sold annually in the United States now have keyless ignitions, so when you considering the huge amount of vehicles the numbers of deaths seem pretty small - still, it's significant enough to take note of, especially in order to avoid similar mistakes that could end up causing deaths.
