Since the airstrikes did not target the part of the territory controlled by the Russians, there were no casualties or damage on the Russian side, and Russia will not respond militarily for now, Azimov said and warned: "If any of the Russians is hurt, we will respond".

"This is grotesque", Pierce told reporters as she left an emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council.

"It's.highly likely an attempt to create complications for the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) mission which was just starting its work in Syria's Douma, or an attempt to completely derail it", Interfax quoted Kosachev as saying.

The Kremlin said Mr Putin warned against rushing to blame the Syrian government before conducting a "thorough and objective probe".

During a phone call late on Thursday, UK Prime Minister Theresa May and US President Donald Trump agreed on the need to deter chemical weapon use in Syria. There is no evidence for now that the Syrian government has used chemical weapons, Azimov said.

On Wednesday, President Donald Trump tweeted that "nice and new and 'smart!'" missiles would be coming Syria's way, and that Russian Federation should "get ready".

The chairman of the worldwide affairs committee of Russia's upper house of parliament, Konstantin Kosachev, said the strikes were a violation of worldwide law and probably created to prevent investigators from the global chemical weapons watchdog from doing their work.

In a nationwide address on Friday night, Trump announced the USA, along with the United Kingdom and France, would launch "precision airstrikes" in Syria.

According to a statement of the French presidency, Macron calls for dialogue between France and Russian Federation to "continue and intensify" to bring peace and stability to Syria. Doubtless, any western attacks carry a military risk and must tread a very careful line between targeting Syrian military facilities and leaving Russian forces alone.

The Turkish leader also said he sent video recordings concerning the "painful and disastrous scenes" in eastern Ghouta and Douma to Putin through an envoy of the Russian leader.

Guterres also said a failure to hold someone accountable for the attack could encourage more. The government, however, said evacuations from Douma were ongoing and no Syrian government forces had entered the town.

The strikes have come after a week-long global push to punish the Assad regime after images and videos emerged on April 7 suggesting civilians - including children - had suffered a chemical attack in Douma.

The Kremlin has not yet released a formal response to the offensive, however, and President Trump addressed both Moscow and Tehran in his Friday evening address.

The United Nations Security Council has rejected a Russian resolution calling for condemnation of the "aggression" by the United States and its allies against Syria.
