Hawkins is said to have been two minutes ahead of his closest competitor, Australia's Michael Shelley, but the challenge of completing such a gruelling race in 28-degree temperatures led to Hawkins' collapse.

In hot conditions on the Gold Coast, the 25-year-old had a two-minute lead and looked set for gold but began weaving before falling over the kerb.

Team Scotland later confirmed that Hawkins had been taken to hospital for medical review "as is standard procedure". "He is being supported by Team Scotland medical staff and there are no major concerns at this stage".

The sight of Hawkins crashing into the bridge railing and collapsing on the road sparked an angry reaction from commentators and on social media, with Games organisers and nearby spectators criticised for their reaction. Munyo Solomon Mutai of Uganda took silver with a time of 2:19.02, with Robbie Simpson of Scotland won bronze, 34 seconds behind Mutai.

"I was moreover concerned in regards to the conduct of a small number of bystanders who chosen to take photos".

Australia's Michael Shelley overtook Hawkins while he was on the ground to claim back-to-back Commonwealth titles. I'm sorry if you're watching this at home, it's really distressing.

He was able to continue, despite having difficulty running in a straight line, but fell to the road two kilometers later and received medical attention as Shelley raced past him on the course.

Mark Peters, chief executive of the local organizing committee, said they would be investigating whether there had been an excessive delay in getting help to Hawkins. I had just a few mates spherical Foremost Seaside who talked about Callum was in a little bit little bit of problem. "I just tried to hang on".

Mr Peters said he was anxious about the actions of some spectators when Hawkins collapsed. I'm glad to be finished to be honest. You can not just wait at the finish line - people get in distress further down the course. "I thought hopefully I can get to the finish line because I was starting to get cramps in my hands". I understand that was part of the discussion (about Hawkins) at a point in time.

The 37-year-old's worldwide career came to a close with a time of 1:30:26 to win by over a minute ahead of John Smith and Simon Lawson, who claimed two medals for England.

He added: "You've got to push through the wall".

"Sometimes medial people arrive too and the athlete has to decide whether they want to go on or not".

Smyth was fourth in 1:31:44, while Callum Hall - team-mate of Smith and Lawson and husband of women's T54 marathon bronze medallist Jade Jones - placed seventh with 1:37:36 on his senior championship debut.

"I've been in the same situation in the heat and I was hallucinating", said Simpson.
