Round one begins and Gaethje comes forward quickly. Geathje lands a big punch that gets Poirier's attention. Each time it looked like Poirier might start to limp, he instead uncorked a lightning fast punching combination that cracked Gaethje in the head over and over again. He follows that up with a low kick. Justin fires off another hard low kick. Big body strike from Poirier. He is unloading punches in bunches here. Gaethje hurt Poirier with a hard right cross and started pouring it on with his hometown crowd cheering his name. Leg kick for Gaethje. Both men swing leather until the horn sounds to end round one.

They are soon back to striking range with two minutes of the round remaining and Gaethje is leading the action for now.

Gaethje with a jab. Poirier shoots in for a takedown but it is not there. As the round ended, it looked like Poirier inadvertently poked Gaethje in the eye. Dustin recovers and then we restart. Left hook from Gaethje only just misse Poirier. Nice straight left. leg kick for Gaethje. It is not there.

Poirier unloaded with a barrage of shots, while Gaethje could only try to remain standing until the punishment mounted and he crumbled to the canvas. Dustin with a nice low kick. Justin with a low kick.

Poirier landed an elbow before the two clinched up against the fence. Gaethje also appeared to have Poirier fading after Round 2 by absorbing every combination his opponent could throw without taking a step backward.

"The Last Stylebender" showcased superb takedown defence while completely dictating the action in the striking exchanges, forcing big reactions from the Italian with his feints before landing with bad intentions over the first two rounds. Gaethje works back into the clinch. Poirier did not like that. Inside leg kick for Gaethje. Poirier tried to catch Justin's leg, but Gaethje rolled out. From back in the days of backflip victories in WSOF, MMA fandom hoped and prayed that Justin's devil-may-care style would one day go against the most elite lightweights in the world.
