Saudi Arabia's King Salman on Sunday opened an Arab League summit by criticising USA president Donald Trump's decision to transfer the USA embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Held amid tight security measures in Dhahran in the Eastern Province, Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz will open the summit, whose agenda will cover several issues of Arab concern.

During the preparatory meeting on Thursday, Saudi Arabia said the Palestinian conflict would top the summit's agenda, though it is likely that airstrikes on Syria from the US, UK and France will now result in a shift in priorities.

The President briefed el-Sisi on the vision he had presented before the UN Security Council in which he stressed the need for a multi-lateral global peace conference that calls for the creation of an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital.

Seemingly starstruck, the US President told Saudi Arabia's next leader: "You are more than the crown prince now".

"We renew our optimism of the leadership of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and his great efforts to ensure a strong Arab role, a unified position and a clear message that the global community understands, appreciates and responds to", HM the King added.

Salman announced that Riyadh would be making a $150 million donation to East Jerusalem.

Leaders of the 22-nation Arab League, who will meet in the Saudi city of Dhahran on Sunday, are expected to stress continuity in their efforts to find a solution to the Syrian conflict. The two regional titans, locked in proxy wars in Syria and in Saudi Arabia's southern neighbor Yemen, back opposing parties in Iraq and Lebanon.

There was little mention of Syria, whose president Bashar al Assad was not invited to the summit.
