However, Mary, a five-time world champion, defeated Kristina O'Hara of Northern Ireland by a unanimous 5:0 verdict to take the women's 48kg title in probably her final CWG campaign.

Saina and Sindhu had both won their respective semi-finals to set up a blockbuster all-Indian final in the women's singles category and a gold and a silver medal was already assured for India. The tactic was based on the weakness of Li at the forecourt and at the net and it worked well for Sindhu, as she set up the Canadian with impeccable drop shots and low placements, before finishing points at her will with powerful smashes.

Saina had forced the lead right at the start of the first game and continued to increase the advantage at a steady pace.

In a spectacular turn of events, the women's singles final of the 2018 Commonwealth Games will be an all-India affair, which is a first in a major worldwide event. The two contrasting styles of the two shuttlers made for an exhilarating contest.

Sindhu did gradually improve and reduced Saina's lead but the latter held on and took the first game 21-18.

However, Saina then seized control again and the turning point came when she won a really long rally while trailing 17-19 where Sindhu showed sublime defence but eventually had no answers to Saina's sustained attack. Saina displayed superb form and her famous fighting abilities to clinch a 21-18, 23-21 victory in the high-pressure match that lasted an hour to bag India's 26th gold medal of the Games.

In addition, India's Manish Kaushik claimed silver medal in the men's 60 kg boxing after losing to Australia's Harry Garside in the final bout.

Kidambi Srikanth has his match with Lee Chong Wei. In the women's doubles action, Ashwini and Sikki bagged the bronze medal, beating Australians Setyana Mapasa and Gronya Somerville 21-19, 21-19.

Meanwhile, in Table Tennis, the pair of Sathiyan and Manika Batra defeated fellow Indian pair of Achanta Sharath and Mouma Das to bring home Bronze in the Mixed Doubles.

Prannoy then lost to World No.22 Ouseph 21-17, 23-25, 9-21 in the bronze medal match at the Carrara Sports Arena here. Ashwini and Satwik had a poor day in the mixed doubles.
