Irish masters Elliott and Mullins set for three-pronged attacks in Grand National

Leading Irish jumps trainers Gordon Elliott and Willie Mullins are set to both be triple-handed in the 2018 Grand National at Aintree on April 14.

This extended 4m 2f handicap steeplechase is the most famous horse race on the planet watched by hundreds of millions worldwide, as a field of 40 runners tackle 30 unique spruce covered fences on the outskirts of Liverpool.

It thus remains the ultimate test of stamina and endurance for National Hunt thoroughbred horses.

Both Elliott and Mullins have saddled Grand National winners before; Hedgehunter won for the latter in 2005 and Silver Birch for the former two years later.

The 2018 renewal has a typically wide-open feel and that’s certainly evident from a betting perspective.

Given the recent exploits of Irish raiders trained by either Elliott or Mullins, who won 15 Cheltenham Festival races between them in March, horses from their stables are among those both backed and tipped on Oddschecker for the Grand National.

Ladbrokes Trophy winner Total Recall spearheads Closutton handler Mullins’ Aintree contingent this year and he’s been prominent in the market ever since that narrow victory in the Newbury handicap formerly known as the Hennessy.

The nine-year-old was three from three since joining Mullins from Sandra Hughes for this season when he fell in the Cheltenham Gold Cup last time out.

Total Recall is reportedly no worse for that tumble so will take his place in the Grand National alongside stablemate Pleasant Company who finished ninth in last year’s race.

Owned by Malcolm Denmark, the 10-year-old is set to race off 1lb lighter on official ratings and 2lb in weight that than 2017 renewal.

Childrens List is the third and final Mullins inmate set to tackle the Grand National for owners Rich and Susannah Ricci, despite the eight-year-old just having four starts over fences.

National Hunt chase winner Rathvinden, Bellshill who ran in the Irish Grand National over Easter, and Acapella Bourgeois were all Mullins entries guaranteed to get in at Aintree but it’s understood they will not take up their engagements.

As for Elliott, his Grand National trio this year are headed by three-time Cheltenham Festival winner Tiger Roll.

Another who has attracted substantial ante-post betting support, the Gigginstown House Stud-owned eight-year-old is proven over extreme distances yet does tend to save his best for Cheltenham where he has recorded four of his eight career victories.

With 2017 Grand National runner-up Cause Of Causes reported lame after trying to defend his Cross Country crown at the Festival, Elliott instead relies on 10-year-old Ucello Conti – another horse with Aintree experience who was arguably unlucky to unseat his rider in last year’s renewal.

Veteran Bless The Wings, twice runner-up in the Irish Grand National, is set to make the 40-runner field at Aintree as other horses will come out of the race at next forfeit stage.

The 13-year-old won a Cross Country handicap at Cheltenham in December but it’s the only time he’s completed a race for Elliott this season.
