Days after Nagaland election results, the National Investigation Agency has issued summons to former chief minister TR Zeliang, asking him to appear before it in Delhi on March 13 in connection with a probe related to alleged "tax collection" and "extortion" from state government departments by banned Naga insurgent groups.

Hau said two summonses were sent to the chief minister's office on Monday - one at 12.15 am (past midnight) and another at 10.15 am - but none to his residence. TOI exclusively accessed the copy of the summon sent to Zeliang.

Zeliang was chief minister of the state until last week, when Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party leader Neiphiu Rio replaced him following the Assembly elections held in February.

In April past year, the NIA had arrested three senior officials of the Nagaland government for their alleged role in large scale extortion and illegal tax collection on behalf of the NSCN (K) from various government departments.

Given the suspicious circumstances, the NPF posed three questions- On what urgency that a summon letter has to be dispatched at 00:15 hrs; given the fact that the first session of the 13th Assembly is slated for March 13, couldn't the NIA wait another day?

Later the questioning of these former ministers, another name that has surfaced in the matter is of the former CM TR Zeliang that is said to be involved in the transfer of government funds for illegal matters like extortion in the state and others, his name is surfaced in National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Khaplang).

Mr Zeliang's Naga People's Front said it was a case of political vendetta.

Zeliang has been asked to appear at the National Investigation Agency (NIA) headquarters here on Tuesday with relevant documents.

NIA had questioned Ruokuovizo Chupno, OSD to Zeliang, and two public relations officers. It said after few days of questioning, they were let off and it appeared that the case against them was settled.

It also stated that "to cast aspersions on the integrity of a man who wants peace and harmony for Nagaland in particular and north eastern region in general, as having committed crimes against the nation worthy to be looked into by an investigating agency instituted to investigate terror activities, is most perplexing".
