Republican senator puts forward bill to quash Trump's new tariffs

Trump frequently attacked multilateral trade deals as a presidential candidate, contending that "unfair" trade relationships with allies have hurt US workers and citing hefty USA trade deficits as evidence.

"As a Republican who believes in free trade, limited government, economic freedom, I couldn't be re-elected in my party right now", Flake said. He praised himself for his forthcoming meeting with North Korea's Kim Jong Un, and he praised Singapore for executing suspected drug dealers, adding that he would like to do the same.

"What's worse, the president's attempt at "flexibility" in the form of poorly defined exemptions only serves to harm the economy further by creating uncertainty", he said.

But Flake says "that's not to say it will stay that way".

Flake, one of the GOP's most outspoken Trump critics, is stoking speculation about his 2020 plans with a Friday appearance in New Hampshire as part of the "Politics & Eggs" speaker series, which draws presidential hopefuls to the first-in-the-nation primary state.

Earlier this month, he said, "I do think the president will have a challenge from the Republican Party, I think there should be". Those who have expressed admiration for free trade, for supply-side economics ought to support this bill as well.

Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., says President Donald Trump should face a Republican primary challenge in his 2020 re-election bid. This year, he has given Senate floor speeches denouncing the president's attacks on the media and antagonism toward Democrats.

U.S. Senator Jeff Flake introduced legislation on Monday to nullify tariffs on imported steel and aluminum announced last week by the White House.

"We should never normalize this kind of behavior, particularly from the president of the United States", Flake said.

"I think that our trade deals have been negotiated for a very, very long time now to benefit large, multinational corporations, not to benefit the American worker", she said.

Todd asked him if other Republicans should join him in condemning Trump's behavior. "The problem is when you say, "Let's have tariffs, but let's couple that with uncertainty" - that's nearly worse, " Flake said.
