The team will sign former Panthers defensive tackle Star Lotulelei to a five-year contract when the new league year begins Wednesday, a league source confirmed to The Buffalo News.

The Bills desperately needed to improve their defensive line. The team traded veteran Marcell Dareus to the Jacksonville Jaguars last season, and impending free agent Kyle Williams' future with the team was up in the air-although now it seems as though his fate in Buffalo is set.

Lotulelei's value isn't seen entirely in stats, considering he's tallied between 22 and 26 tackles in each of the last four years.

The Buffalo Bills have made another splash in the 2018 offseason. Of those yards, 1,105 were inside the tackles, and opponents' 4.8 yards per rush inside the tackles was tied for worst in the NFL.

Lotulelei was a five-year starter with Carolina after being selected by the Panthers in the first round of the 2013 draft.

In five seasons, Lotulelei hasn't qualified for one Pro Bowl and has tallied just 11.5 sacks.

The Bills also tendered exclusive-rights contracts to tight end Nick O'Leary, defensive end Eddie Yarbrough, tight end Logan Thomas and cornerback Lafayette Pitts, a source told ESPN. He's started all 16 contests each of the past two years and is one of the better run-stoppers around.
