ICE Spokesman Quits, Bashes Trump Administration On Immigration Raids

ICE Spokesman Quits, Bashes Trump Administration On Immigration Raids ICE Spokesman Quits, Bashes Trump Administration On Immigration Raids

Last week, both Homan and Sessions heavily criticized Oakland Mayor Libby Scaaf for warning the public about immigration raids "as soon as within the next 24 hours".

"To say that 100 percent are risky criminals on the street, or that those people weren't picked up because of the misguided actions of the mayor, is just wrong", he told the San Francisco Chronicle yesterday (March 12). I told them that the information was wrong, they asked me to deflect, and I didn't agree with that. "Then I took some time and I quit", Schwab said.

In his attack on Schaaf, Trump said 85 percent of the targeted immigrants had criminal records.

ICE released a press release on February 27 about the operations in Northern California in which Homan stated that "864 criminal aliens and public safety threats remain at large in the community, and I have to believe that some of them were able to elude us thanks to the mayor's irresponsible decision".

Schwab joins other notable federal government workers who publicly resigned over disagreements with the Trump administration on immigration. They blamed Schaaf's warning for ICE's failure to apprehend all of its targets-the raid resulted in around 200 arrests. Schaaf's actions "clearly had an impact" on the number of arrests, though the agency can't put a number on it.

The next day, President TrumpDonald John TrumpAccuser says Trump should be afraid of the truth Woman behind pro-Trump Facebook page denies being influenced by Russians Shulkin says he has White House approval to root out "subversion" at VA MORE said that "close to 1,000" people were expected to be arrested before the mayor issued her warning. "To say that 100 percent are unsafe criminals on the street, or that those people weren't picked up because of the misguided actions of the mayor, is just wrong", Schwab said.

Schwab said the statements about immigrants evading arrest, which were widely quoted in an array of media outlets, were misleading "because we were not ever going to be able to capture 100 percent of the target list" of roughly 1,000 undocumented immigrants in Northern California.

"I just couldn't bear the burden - continuing on as a representative of the agency and charged with upholding integrity, knowing that information was false", Schwab told CNN.

But according to Schwab, that was an unrealistic estimate.

Mr. Schwab did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Tuesday.

The ICE agency confirmed Schwab's departure to the Chronicle, but did not provide a reason for his resignation citing confidential matters.

The Department of Justice declined to comment.

"They were all set, this was long in the planning and she said get out of here and she's telling that to criminals", Trump said.

"Maria Mendoza-Sanchez and her husband are an example of a couple that, under the previous administration, were considered low-priority for deportation", Schaaf said.

Administration officials clarified that they haven't arrested anyone at a church, hospital, or school ground. I was absolutely thinking of them when I made the decision to share the [ICE enforcement] information.

"Personally I think her actions were misguided and not responsible", Schwab told CNN.

Schaaf praised Schwab's action. "I think she could have had other options". "Our democracy depends on public servants who act with integrity and hold transparency in the highest regard". There also said that ICE does not conduct arbitrary sweeps of neighborhoods, but only targets homes and employers of illegal immigrants they have been tracking for months.

Their claims were questioned by critics - and now by Schwab, a veteran public affairs officer who had worked at the Defense Department and NASA. "I felt like we weren't doing that".
