Buying millennial railcard 'harder than getting Glastonbury tickets'

However, people trying to buy the national railcard today have experienced problems doing so as the website keeps crashing. This did not go down well with the people, who took to Twitter to voice their displeasure.

The millennial railcard announced in Philip Hammond's last Autumn Budget largely grants those aged 26-30 the same privileges as holders of the 16-25 railcard; that is, a third off all travel. "Sort out your website to make it fair!"

Meanwhile, Tom Drury, from London, wrote: "The launch of the new railcard is a shambles".

A spokesperson for the Rail Delivery Group, which represents train operators and Network Rail, comments: "We're sorry to those who have been unable to buy a trial 26-30 Railcard this morning".

There was previously no nationwide railcard available for people travelling alone between the ages of 26 and 59 unless they were disabled or in the armed forces.

The 26-30 railcards will cost £30 a year and get travellers a third of most fares. There will be a £12 minimum on tickets between 4.30am and 10am, excluding weekends and public holidays.

The new railcard can be bought on the 26-30 railcard website.

As The Independent revealed on 11 March, the first batch of railcards available to anyone in the United Kingdom born between 14 March 1987 and 13 March 1992 was due to be released on 13 March.

The railcard is a digital-only card.

By 8am it had crashed, redirecting customers to a page that says "Service unavailable" when they click the "Buy now" button.

This is slightly more nuanced than it first appears.

The 26-30 Railcard won't apply to season tickets, Eurostar, and most London Underground and Docklands Light Railway tickets - unless using Oyster pay-as-you-go. Meanwhile, purchasing the railcard over the phone is also proving hard - The Independent has been on hold for more than 40 minutes at the time of writing (with no end in sight).

Only 10,000 railcards are being released during the trial.

Good news for rail users is a rare thing indeed, so let's roll out the bunting, get the party poppers in and all have a slice of cake to celebrate the news that Millennials everywhere are going to be able to get their sweaty little hands on a brand spanking new railcard tomorrow.
