Buhari denies assent to amended 2018 Electoral Act Buhari denies assent to amended 2018 Electoral Act

THE Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said that it was not surprised that President Muhammadu Buhari withheld his assent to the legislation by the National Assembly, reordering the sequence of general elections in the country, particularly given the tendencies he has continued to display as a politician.

Earlier in February, the Joint Committees of the National Assembly agreed on some of the amendments to the Electoral Act.

The bill provides for the Presidential election to come last after National Assembly and Governorship elections.

The amendment had passed in both the Senate and the House and its now awaiting Buhari's assent.

Some commentators have also risen to fault the amendment and threatened to charge it in court.

Abuja (Sundiata Post)- Senate President Bukola Saraki has informed that the 8th senate is focusing its attention ondu the modernization of our electoral system, to make the process more accountable and insulated from political influence.

But in the letter, the president said amending section 25 of the electoral act would infringe on the "constitutionally guaranteed discretion" of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to organise, undertake and supervise elections.

He revealed this while giving his remarks on Monday at the Public Hearing of a Bill for an Act to Establish the National Electoral Offences Commission (NEOC).

"Please accept Mr Senate President the assurances of my highest consideration", the president stated.

"C. The amendment to Section 152 (3)-(5) of the Principal Act may raise Constitutional issues over the competence of the National Assembly to legislate over local government elections".
