At least 19 people have been killed and 47 injured after a double-decker bus overturned in Hong Kong, while 27 people died when a tourist bus plunged from a hill in Indonesia.

The accident left at 65 people injured, police said Sunday.

Racegoers were being transported back to Tai Po Centre on the double-decker bus when it flipped on its side on Tai Po Road.

According to injured passengers, the bus was allegedly going faster than allowed after they had complained that the bus was 10 minutes behind schedule, local media reported.

Police said Sunday the driver of the bus, a 30-year-old man, was arrested on risky driving charges and was being detained as the investigation continues. He was not in need of medical treatment. "He is still being detained for further enquiries", police said in a statement early Sunday. It was really chaotic in the bus.

Along with the 27 killed, at least 18 others were hospitalised with injuries, some in critical condition, following the crash on Saturday on a winding slope in Subang in West Java province, said local police chief Muhammad Joni.

Since the crash, Democratic Party lawmaker Lam Cheuk-ting has brought up the danger of double-decker bus design, which may be "posing a serious threat to passengers on the upper level".

He also called on the government to address the issue of many drivers working overly long hours.

City leader Carrie Lam, who visited survivors at the Prince of Wales Hospital late on Saturday, expressed "deep sorrow" and pledged there would be an independent investigation.
