Michelle Carr, a nurse and new mother living in Kittery, Maine, displaying a dead lizard that she found and while eating a fresh salad.
A ME woman who prepared a salad says she realized after a couple of bites that her fork was stuck in a 3-inch lizard, minus the tail, and not in her avocado. The mother of a 10-week-old boy had thought of having a quick lunch and mixed some lettuce, grape tomatoes, olive oil and balsamic vinegar and was enjoying her lunch when her fork stuck into something hard. And wouldn't you know it, but after a few bites her fork found something that shouldn't had been there: a dead lizard. I immediately started to retch,"Carr told WMUR".
The reptile was missing its tail.
'How could this happen?' she said.
Carr and her son never experienced any signs of illness. Carr's biologist friend believes the reptile is a blue-bellied lizard native to the west coast state. She said she is concerned about a wider-public health issue with several recalls of romaine lettuce for various bacteria concerns, including E. coli, over the past couple years. She added, "That was very, very scary for me".
Carr said she then called representatives at the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services (NHDHHS), Shaw's and the Food and Drug Administration but had not yet heard if her complaint was being investigated.
Carr hopes her incident comes as a warning to others to watch what they purchase and to know where it comes from.
Ms Carr said she was anxious about her baby's health. 'We need to be really diligent about washing your produce no matter where you get it from'. A spokesperson for Shaw's said the company is working with the lettuce supplier to figure out why this happened and how to prevent it. DHHS said the case falls outside its jurisdiction because the lettuce was packaged outside the state, but confirmed that the FDA is investigating the incident.
