Trump alleged Schiff left confidential meetings to leak information
06 February, 2018, 16:23
Trump and his Republican allies in Congress on Friday escalated a campaign against US law enforcement agencies over their probe of the president's ties to Russian Federation, releasing a disputed memo that the Federal Bureau of Investigation warned was misleading and inaccurate.
Schiff has slammed the release of a congressional memo that alleges FBI surveillance abuses in an investigation into the Trump campaign's Russian Federation ties.
But it was produced by the staff of Rep. Devin Nunes, the Republican chairman of the House intelligence committee who for months has faced criticism over his close ties to the Trump White House.
He also said the failure to provide the classified information that the memo is based on shows Nunes is being "exceptionally partisan".
This is not the first time Brennan has spoken out about the memo. "But with the release of the Nunes memo - a backhanded attempt to cast doubt on the origins of the Special Counsel's investigation - we can only conclude that House Republicans are complicit in the effort to help the President avoid accountability for his actions and for the actions of his campaign".
There are now several investigations into possible ties between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation, but Trump has repeatedly denied any collusion with Russian Federation in its efforts to influence the 2016 election. At this point, if you actually want to get my attention, the bar is set at 'Porn star spanks president with magazine.' Also, this is a four-page memo that just cherry-picks information from a FISA document that's like 50 or 60 pages long.
The New York Times also reported Friday that the FISA court was told about political motivations behind the dossier.
Trump on Saturday tweeted he felt vindicated by the findings in the memo. Page had stopped advising the campaign sometime around the end of that summer.
The confirmation about Papadopoulos is "the most important fact disclosed in this otherwise shoddy memo", Schiff said Saturday. But Democratic and Republican lawmakers say that assertion is wrong.
The memo names former officials in the Obama administration who signed off on the warrants, saying former FBI Director James Comey signed three applications, and soon to resign Deputy Director Andrew McCabe and former Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates each signed at least one.
Speaking of the claims in the memo, Mr Trump said: "A lot of people should be ashamed".
But Republicans and the president have said the FBI's methods were troubling and the public should be informed.
On Friday, the committee's ranking Democrat, Rep. Adam Schiff of California, took issue with the memo's characterization of McCabe's comments, saying the former Federal Bureau of Investigation deputy director was speaking generally about how any FISA application relies on "each and every component" included.
Asked Friday whether he still has confidence in Rosenstein, Trump told reporters: "You figure that one out".
White House spokesman Raj Shah said merely that consideration of a release would "allow for a legal review, national security review led by the White House counsel's office".
The FBI has disputed the memo's content, calling it inaccurate and objecting to what it called "material omissions of fact that fundamentally impact the memo's accuracy".
"Dishonest and misleading memo wrecked the House intel committee, destroyed trust with Intelligence Community, damaged relationship with FISA court, and inexcusably exposed classified investigation of an American citizen", he wrote.
Nunes was asked during a January 29 committee meeting whether he had co-ordinated the memo with the White House.
As the political battle over the Nunes memo reached its peak, House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., dismissed allegations that it was a political hit job and said it was just Congress doing its job.
Trump and his campaign have been under scrutiny from law enforcement officials over possible collusion with what officials describe as Russia's "influence campaign" aimed at damaging Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.
Senior Democrats have warned President Donald Trump not to use a controversial memo as a "pretext" to fire the special counsel probing alleged Russian involvement in the 2016 U.S. election.
