After 11 years of failing to break the big time, Malone took a gamble: she dyed her hair platinum blonde, shed her good girl image, and took on the role of the alcoholic, sex-addicted daughter of a Texas oil baron, in love with Rock Hudson's geologist character in 1956's Written on the Wind.
Malone died Friday morning in Dallas, manager Burt Shapiro told Variety.
Malone began her decades-long career in 1943 with small roles in films such as Frank Sinatra musicals Higher and Higher (1943) and Step Lively (1944), and Show Business (1944) with Eddie Cantor and George Murphy.
The Oscar led to roles in Too Much, Too Soon, Man of a Thousand Faces and Warlock.
For millions of Americans, however, the Dallas-reared Malone was best known for playing overprotective single mother Constance MacKenzie on ABC's Peyton Place, the first primetime serialized drama on USA television.
She then moved to TV between 1964 and 1968, starring in Peyton Place - an American soap-opera inspired by the UK's success with Coronation Street. It worked, and the part won her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. In recent years she was considered one of the last surviving stars of the Golden Age of Hollywood.
Dorothy Eloise Maloney was born in Chicago on January 30, 1925. She attended Southern Methodist University.
After that deal lapsed, Warner Bros. noticed her, shortened her name from Maloney to Malone and placed her in Howard Hawks' noir detective thriller The Big Sleep.
Dorothy played Hazel Dobkins - a friend of Stone's character who had murdered her family.
She performed on live TV during the 1950s when she was between motion pictures. She later appeared on such series as The Untouchables, Ironside, Rich Man, Poor Man and Matt Houston.
The actress was married and divorced three times - to actor Jacques Bergerac, Robert Tomarkin and Charles Huston Bell.
Malone passed away in an assisted living centre from natural causes days before her 94th birthday, said her daughter, Mimi Vanderstraaten.
